Typhani Sheppard is an Afro-Caribbean designer & native New Yorker from Brooklyn. Her intersectional identity as a Queer Black Woman informs the way she designs. Her collections showcase how she wished people like herself were viewed by society: tender, luxurious, and emotional. An alum of the Fashion Institute of Technology BFA, Typhani finds inspiration in art, culture, and society. With her brand ph, new york, she hopes to tell powerful stories, elicit emotions and unite people in compelling ways. Typhani started her brand in 2020. What was initially intended to be a series of sketches to update her portfolio ended with securing a small studio space in Ridgewood, Queens, to house her then single knitting machine. She presented her first capsule collection at a joint exhibition in October 2021 sponsored by NYFA (New York Foundation of the Arts). Typhani looks at her work for ph, new york, as an opportunity to continue to use her artistic voice and put out her point of view. All ph, new york’s knitwear items are made entirely in-house by hand on one of Typhani’s two Brother knitting machines.
